LUKE, Attorney Mary P., of Braintree, MA, formerly of Cambridge, Boston, and Duxbury passed away suddenly at South Shore Hospital on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. She was a graduate of Emmanuel College, Boston (Class of 1970) and Suffolk Law School. Mary’s law career included guardianships for the elderly and mentally ill for the state of Massachusetts for more than thirty years. Notably, she worked on the “Framingham Eight” case with a group of advocate attorneys who helped change domestic abuse laws for women in Massachusetts. Mary was an avid lover of the theater and music. She was a professionally trained soprano and enjoyed Broadway shows and the Opera. She was a well-educated and articulate woman with a wide variety of interests including law, politics, history, literature, religion, social issues and medicine. Her counsel, empathy and depth of understanding will be missed by her friends and family. Mary is survived by her loving daughter, Jennifer Doherty of Dedham, her grandaughter Kiara Tahiraj of Dedham, and her sister Theresa Luke of Weymouth. She is predeceased by parents Guy F. Luke, and Marie Luke, her brother Gerald Luke, and her late husband Alvin E. Wanthal. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Mary will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known her. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, January 25th, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 26th, at 10:00 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Braintree. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Randolph.
