Skip was born on July 12, 1938 in Boston. He and his siblings were raised on Sidney Street in Dorchester. His childhood friends from Dorchester remained his lifelong friends. He attended Boston Latin School and graduated from Boston English High School in 1957.
Upon high school graduation, Skip enrolled at Franklin Technical Institute, where he earned a degree in automotive mechanics.
Following graduation, he joined the United States Coast Guard, serving for eight years as a reservist. At the Coast Guard Station in Boston’s North End, he developed a love of Italian food and learned how to make chicken parmigiana.
Soon afterwards, Skip joined his father working in the family Sunoco gas station at 241 Old Colony Avenue in South Boston. They embarked on a dream to start an independent bargain transmission business. The dream and the business grew with the additional expertise of Skip’s brother, John. Within 15 years, they had purchased the building and opened a second location in Boston’s South End, making them one the largest transmission centers in Boston.
When he retired in 2013, Skip penned a thank you letter to the people of South Boston, stating, “It has been an honor and pleasure to be part of the community for so many years.” He continued, “As I look back on this dream, the most enjoyable thing was getting to know and having the people the of South Boston welcome my family as friends and neighbors.”
Skip and Judy built their dream retirement home in Chatham, where they lived for the last ten years. They celebrated many happy occasions there, and on his nearby boat, with family and friends. Skip and Judy reveled in their Friday night dinners with their Chatham crew at all of the local hot spots. They also enjoyed spending warm winters and having lots of laughs in Sarasota, Florida with their dear pals from Boston.
