Cartwright Funeral Homes

ADAMS, Walter “Skip”, of Chatham, formerly of Braintree, entered into eternal rest on May 12, 2022. Skip was the devoted husband of Judy (Moran) for 57 years. He was the loving father to Kathleen Adams Veneri (Michael) of Bethesda, Maryland and Mark Adams of Laguna Beach, California, and the doting grandfather to William Veneri. Skip also leaves his brother, John Adams and his wife Alice of Dennis, sister in law to Patricia Molloy of Quincy, and many nieces and nephews. Skip was pre-deceased by his parents, Sadie and Wilbur, and his sisters, Mary and Ann, all of Milton.

Skip was born on July 12, 1938 in Boston. He and his siblings were raised on Sidney Street in Dorchester. His childhood friends from Dorchester remained his lifelong friends. He attended Boston Latin School and graduated from Boston English High School in 1957.

Upon high school graduation, Skip enrolled at Franklin Technical Institute, where he earned a degree in automotive mechanics.
Following graduation, he joined the United States Coast Guard, serving for eight years as a reservist. At the Coast Guard Station in Boston’s North End, he developed a love of Italian food and learned how to make chicken parmigiana.

Soon afterwards, Skip joined his father working in the family Sunoco gas station at 241 Old Colony Avenue in South Boston. They embarked on a dream to start an independent bargain transmission business. The dream and the business grew with the additional expertise of Skip’s brother, John. Within 15 years, they had purchased the building and opened a second location in Boston’s South End, making them one the largest transmission centers in Boston.

When he retired in 2013, Skip penned a thank you letter to the people of South Boston, stating, “It has been an honor and pleasure to be part of the community for so many years.” He continued, “As I look back on this dream, the most enjoyable thing was getting to know and having the people the of South Boston welcome my family as friends and neighbors.”

Skip and Judy built their dream retirement home in Chatham, where they lived for the last ten years. They celebrated many happy occasions there, and on his nearby boat, with family and friends. Skip and Judy reveled in their Friday night dinners with their Chatham crew at all of the local hot spots. They also enjoyed spending warm winters and having lots of laughs in Sarasota, Florida with their dear pals from Boston.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, May 18th from 4:00 – 8:00 PM in the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 12:00 PM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Braintree. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Skip’s name to Broad Reach Hospice, 1455 Main Street, Chatham, MA 02650.
