BELANGER, Robert E. “Hoppy”, of Braintree, passed away on March 20, 2022, after a period of failing health, at the age of 86. Born in North Adams, MA, Robert grew up in Braintree and graduated from Braintree High School. SSGT Belanger was an honorably discharged veteran of the US Army. He proudly served 34 years on the Town of Braintree Fire Department, retiring as Deputy Fire Chief in 1996. While on the fire department, he was awarded several commendations for his heroic actions in the line of duty. In his free time, Robert enjoyed harness racing over the years, working as both a groom and trainer. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to Canada, visiting Civil War Battle sites and playing his weekly online golf with his friends. A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Robert will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to have known him. Robert was the beloved husband of Judith (MacGillivray) Belanger. Loving father of Theresa Caldwell and her husband Bruce of Brockton, Robert Belanger, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Holbrook and Lisa Bradbury and her husband James of Weymouth. Devoted brother of Michael Belanger of Carver, Sarah Loveday of CT, Claudia Hayward of ME and the late Edna Wallace, Barbara Sarno, Alan Belanger, Leon Belanger, and John Belanger. Cherished “Grampa Chief” to Jamie, Cole, Tyler and Samantha, and “Great Grampa” to Jenna. Former husband of Sandra Lehr of Cohasset. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, March 25th from 4:00 – 8:00 PM in the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 10:00 AM in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Randolph. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
