BURKE, Joseph E. “Joe” age 88, of Braintree, formerly of Randolph, passed away on July 26, 2021. Former teacher and elementary school principal for the Randolph Public Schools. Son of the late Joseph A. and Anna E. (Tansey) Burke. Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth A. “Betty” Burke. Much loved Dad of Deborah A. Notinger and her husband Steven of Nashua, NH, Joseph H. Burke and the late Evanne Burke of Braintree, Dianne E. Silvia and her husband Derek of Bridgewater, and Paul A. Burke and his wife Jodi of Danvers. Adored “Bubba” of Jacob, Spencer, Elizabeth, Sarah, Justin, Brian, Callie, Samantha, Christina, Maxson, and Addison, and many of their friends. Devoted brother of Gerard “Gerry” Burke and his wife Rosemary of Norton, and James “Jim” Burke and his wife Patricia of Wilbraham; dear brother-in-law of Florence Burke of Sagamore Beach, Philip Murphy of Walpole, and Janice Hamilton of Brookline. Predeceased by sisters Irene Burke and Jean Murphy, and brother John “Jack” Burke. Joe is also survived by many nieces and nephews who remember him fondly on the porch or manning the grill at Hampton Beach. Joe was a gentleman and educator through and through. He loved to use big words (unconsciously, and so forth) and engage in meaningful conversations with everyone he met, whether it be his students, his fellow teachers, or his grandkids. He loved his time as a teacher and principal in Randolph, starting at the Lyons School, where he met his true love Betty, and working his way through the Belcher, Tower Hill, Stetson, McNeil and Young Schools. He couldn’t go anywhere in town without a young person saying, “Hey Mr. Burke, remember me?” And he always did. He loved his family so much, not only his four kids and eleven grandkids, but all of their friends, his siblings, and his extended family. In his later years his ideal day consisted of waiting with a big smile on the porch at Hampton Beach for whomever was visiting, and sitting in the afternoon sun on the beach with his crossword puzzle. We will so miss his stories and quiet, steady, humor-filled demeanor, and sadly, Dunkin Donuts and the Boston Globe have lost their best customer. Reposing at the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington Street, Braintree, MA until 11:30 AM on Friday, July 30, 2021, followed by a Funeral Mass celebrating Joe’s life at 12:00 noon at St. Mary Church, 211 N. Main Street, Randolph, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Thursday, July 29th from 4:00 -8:00 PM at Cartwright-Venuti in Braintree. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Randolph, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Joe and Betty Burke Memorial Scholarship Fund,” c/o RAH Federal Credit Union, 45 Diauto Drive, Randolph, MA 02368, to be established to help students graduating from Randolph High who wish to pursue a college degree in education (Joe and Betty’s passion), or a charity of your choice.
