HATHAWAY, January 1, 1929-March 18, 2021

On January 1st, 1929, Helen Charlotte (McGarrell) Hathaway was the first baby born in Boston, Massachusetts to Helen (Scrivens) and Edward McGarrell of Jamaica Plain, MA.

Helen passed away peacefully at Gosnell Hospice House on March 18, 2021 at the age of 92. Our hearts are comforted knowing she is now reunited with her beloved husband, James Henry Hathaway.

Helen owned and operated Mary Jane’s Beauty Shop in Holbrook for many years. A devoted Catholic, she served as Eucharistic Minister and sang in the choir at St. Joseph’s Church in Holbrook. Equally devoted to her family and community, after retirement she volunteered with local service organizations and enjoyed summers with her family in Old Orchard Beach. When she became visually impaired by macular degeneration, she went back to school at 73 years young at the Carroll Center for the Blind. After a long life, her family takes comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and is now at peace.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Gail Hathaway Audet of Quincy and Lynne Hathaway and son-in-law Steve Kovacs of Saco, ME; Godchildren Maryann R., Marianne G., Rick, Francis, Brad and Harry; two grandchildren, Danielle Audet Khanna, and Jonathan Hathaway; three great grandchildren, Erika, Kyle, and Kiran; great great grandchild, Noah; her sister-in-law Lorraine; many nieces and nephews including, Debbie, Lisa, Jimmy, Patty, Maureen, Christine, and Michelle; and many great nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her loving sisters, Patricia Carley and Joan Lacquadara.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, private funeral and burial services will occur, with the assistance of Cartwright Funeral Homes of Holbrook, MA, on Monday, March 29th. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Helen’s name are asked to consider American Macular Degeneration Fund.

Her family plans to host a virtual Celebration of Life on Monday March 29th at 8pm so that the larger community who loved her, can celebrate and share memories together. Please email for the link to attend the celebration.
