MacMILLAN, Marcia H. (McGinnes) of Braintree, died on January 29, 2021, at the age of 80. Marcia was the daughter of the late Helen McGinnes of Lowell and John McGinnes of Kilsyth, Scotland. Marcia grew up in Dorchester, the middle child of three siblings. She was a self-described tomboy but also a cheerleader at Dorchester High. Her plans for college were delayed after she was hospitalized for 18 months with tuberculosis at the age of 17. Once she recovered, she attended Boston State College and received a teaching degree. She taught special education for many years in Brockton Public Schools, having returned to college to get her master's degree in mid life. Her specialty was teaching children and adults to read and she particularly loved teaching children whose brains worked differently. She continued to tutor well into her seventies. Marcia loved animals, from her loyal dog companion of her childhood to the rescue cats who shared her home in her later years. There was a menagerie in between, including Beau the epileptic poodle and Smokey the stray with cardiomyopathy. Marcia was patient and kind and had a great sense of humor.
Marcia is survived by her sister, Barbara Gaffney of Boston, her brother, Tom McGinnes and his wife Lois of Mansfield, her son Craig MacMillan of Middleboro, her daughter Holly MacMillan of Braintree, and her three grandchildren Ian, Kyle and Kaylin. Services will be private. For those who wish to make a donation in Marcia's memory, please consider Quincy Animal Shelter or the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements under the direction of Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree.
