CASTALDINI, Paul James Castaldini, 79, of Holbrook, Massachusetts, passed away on May 7th after a lengthy battle with cancer.
A Vietnam War veteran and technical sergeant in the United States Air Force, Paul served with distinction for twenty years, earning many medals and commendations. He began his career in the military in 1956 flying into the eyes of hurricanes and learning air traffic control; by the time of his retirement from the Air Force in 1976, he was a recognized and honored instructor in the 71st Flying Training Wing who taught critical flight and navigation skills to fellow service members and allies around the world. Paul was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Daniel and Frances (Cunningham) Castaldini on March 13, 1939. A master of the skies (even if he sometimes struggled with street directions to Logan Airport – even when he worked there), he was a patient and loving father who could sit for hours, listen to and share stories with anyone who crossed his path. He married Alice Higgins “over the rainbow” at the Freeport Yacht Club in Dorcester. He is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughters, Rayna Sussek, Keri-Ann Castaldini and Michelle Ringuette; his grandchildren Amanda Maxwell, Kevin Christian, Holly and Cheyanne DeGraf, Eamon Price, Nadia St. Louis and Seamus Sussek; his siblings Danny and Fran Castaldini; and countless friends made during his decades-long work at Delta Airlines and Reebok. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Charlene McMahon.
Funeral services will be private, and he will be laid to rest at the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Cape Cod. A celebration of his life in recognition of his unparalleled kindness to others will be scheduled for later this spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Family Support (
