Obituaries

MATHIS, Donna Louise, 76, of Brockton, formerly of Plymouth, passed away April 20, 2018 after a brief illness. Donna was born in Troy, New York on Jan. 7, 1942. After growing up in the small town of Mechanicville, New York, she met Charles “Chuck” Mathis, a Valdosta, Georgia native serving in the Navy and stationed in upstate New York. After getting married on Dec. 8, 1962, Chuck’s Navy duties aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise during the Vietnam War took their family to San Francisco and Idaho before they settled in Manomet in 1970 when Chuck took a job with the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant. In retirement, Donna and Chuck relocated to Columbia, South Carolina for several years. Donna described herself as a “Jill of all trades,” doing various jobs along the way, including working in restaurants and office settings. Early in life she thought she wanted to be a flight attendant, but that never materialized, due in part to her fear of flying. After Chuck passed away in December 2012, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary, Donna moved back to the Priscilla Beach area of Plymouth before moving in with her daughter’s family in Brockton. While back in the area, she enjoyed spending time at Foxwoods, not only playing the slots, but taking bubble baths in the hotel room and attending concerts of various genres of music, with the latest being Lynyrd Skynyrd. Donna was a devoted family woman who enjoyed spending time with her children and their families, and dear friends, who were there to provide her with support after Chuck’s passing. She is survived by her son Gregory Mathis and daughter-in-law Alice Coyle Mathis of Plymouth, Mass.; and her daughter Kristian Sanda and son-in-law Joseph Sanda of Brockton, Mass.; five grandchildren, Kira Hamilton of New Bedford, Mass.; Danielle, Joseph Jr., and the late P.J. Sanda of Brockton, Mass.; and Christopher Comer, of Plymouth; and two great grandchildren, Paige and Brady Hamilton, of New Bedford, Mass. She is also survived by her older brother, William Miller, and his wife Marian, of Saratoga Springs, New York, several nieces and nephews and dear friends. Donna was the daughter of the late William and Beatrice (Benson) Miller. She was preceded in death by her older brother, Howard. She was also preceded in death by her beloved Shih Tzu, Simba, and cockatiel, Zorro. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 20 at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, 601 State Road, Manomet, Mass. A private interment for Donna and Chuck will be held at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
