His firm of George & George included torts, probate and family law, real estate, banking, corporate, labor and municipal law. He served as the Town of Holbrook’s moderator from 1955 to 1969 and as Town Counsel of Holbrook from 1964 to 1965 and from 1969 to 2009.
Mr. George was born in the Town of Holbrook on March 12, 1923 to Thomas and Mary George and was the last of nine children. A 1940 graduate of Sumner High School, he began his studies at Boston University, which were interrupted on account of the war. After the war he completed his LLB Degree in 1947 from Boston University.
At age 19, Mr. George enlisted in the Army Reserves at Boston University along with some of his classmates. In 1942 his Army Reserve Unit was called into the US Army and was ordered to Fort Devens. Mr. George received his basic training at Camp Lee Virginia and was transferred to The Atlanta Ordinance Base. Mr. George was relocated to the 166th Ordinance Tire Repair Company in Pomona California in the Spring of 1943. He gained the rank of Staff Sargent and assumed control of a squad. Mr. George served in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea, the Philippines and the Army of Occupation in Japan after the surrender of the Japanese Empire to Allied Forces. Prior to the end of the war he received the rank of First Sargent.
Mr. George was a pioneer in the frequent use of the Confirmation Process in the Massachusetts Land Court. One of his cases argued before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, The Daley Construction case, upheld the statutory limitations imposed upon Planning Boards. The certification of titles for new owners of residential Real Estate by Bank Attorneys was a direct result of Mr. George’s efforts.
He was the founder of the Massachusetts Association of Bank Counsel and served as its president for many years. He was elected President of the Bar Association of the Norfolk County. He was a lifetime member of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Diana (Kanavos), and leaves behind his son Attorney Arthur C. George, who for many years was his partner in the law firm of George & George, his daughter Christina George Bill, his daughter-in-law Soteria George, his son-in-law Johan Bill and his grandchildren, Charles A. George, Peter A. George and his wife Joanna, Elizabeth and her husband Ryan Despres, Stephanie Bill and Anders Charles Bill and his great-grand children, Soteria George and Diana Despres. He is also survived by his sister Anastacia G. Ellard, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. His quiet demeanor, as well as his advice and counsel, will be missed. Franklin St., Holbrook A 02343 until 8:45 AM Saturday, October 21, 2017, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 AM in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 457 Oak St., Brockton, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday, October 20, 2017, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Burial in Union Cemetery, Holbrook. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
