Loving mother of Ernestine Haddad of Randolph, Evelyn McSweeney of Martha's Vineyard and Margaret "Peggy" Sullivan of Randolph. Devoted sister of Lillian Jule of Dorchester. Also survived by 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Boston and died at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Thursday 11/30 at the age of 89. Evelyn was a homemaker. She has been a resident of Randolph since 1949. She has been happily married for over 50 years. She loved to travel and spend time with her husband.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Somerville, MA. She graduated from St. John High School, Cambridge and from Emmanuelle College with a BA in English. She has lived in Holbrook for the past 44 years. Mrs. Houlahan was a retired 3rd grade school teacher for the Town of Holbrook. She retired about 9 years ago after having taught for over 30 years. She taught at both the South Elementary School and the Kennedy School in Holbrook. She was also a member of the "Friends of the Holbrook Public Library". She always felt that her main focus in life and most import role was that of a homemaker and mother.

RICHARDS HIRSCH, of Somerville formerly of Holbrook after a long battle with breast cancer died Nov. 27. Judith "Judy" Richards beloved wife of Mark L. Hirsch. Loving mother of Aaron D. Hirsch of FL. Loving daughter of Lucille "Lou" (Stone) Richards of FL and the late Joseph H. Richards. Devoted sister of Jacqueline LaBelle Davis of FL and Jon S. Richards of Huntsville, AL. Dear aunt of Cynthia Connolly, Jennifer Houghton, Kristen Jung, Alia Richards, and Sterling Richards. Judy died at her home in Somerville at the age of 46. She has made her home in Somerville for the past 13 years. She was born in Boston, grew up in Holbrook and graduated from Holbrook High School, Class of 1971. For over 5 years she has been the receptionist at Eco/Centric Hair Salon on Newbury Street, in Boston. She was also an Aerobics Instructor. Last year they had a benefit for her to raise money to enable her to go to Germany for a cancer treatment. She had a group of High School friend's that referred to themselves as "Team Judy".

"Team Judy", the group of friends, would go to various cancer walks or runs and enter as a team for Judy and with Judy. Judy had great concern and compassion for animals and animal rights. She was an ardent supporter of the MASPCA. This was something that was very important to her. Rev. Steve Youd, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Hanson will conduct and officiate at the services.

CARMICHAEL, of Weymouth, suddenly November 22, 2000, Richard T. Jr. Loving son of Richard T. Carmichael Sr of Hull and Lois A. (Campbell) Carmichael of Braintree. Beloved brother of Diane Holbrook and her husband David of Carver. Devoted grandson of Eileen Greenough of Weymouth. Uncle of Brandon and Collin Holbrook of Carver. Cousin and close friend of Bill and John Campbell of Weymouth. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Reposing at the Cartwright Funeral Home 69 So. Franklin St. (Rte.37) Holbrook. Richard was born in Boston and died at the age of 36. He grew up in Weymouth and attended Weymouth schools. Richard was a construction laborer and spent 18 years in service to the National Guard as a Private E4.

NELSON, in Tucson, AZ formerly of Randolph after a long illness Nov. 22, Ada (Stimpson) Nelson wife of the late Laurence Nelson. Loving mother of Donna Snider and her husband Barry of AZ. Sister of the late Rita Beck. Dear "grandmother" of Marc and Eric Snider both of NH and Robin Kelly of FL. Mrs. Nelson died at the age of 92 in Tucson AZ after a long illness with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Brockton, grew up there and was educated in Brockton Public School's. For many years she worked in the men's department of Filene's of Braintree. She retired at the age of 65.

Laskaris of Jamaica Plain and Pamela Ostman of Braintree. Devoted brother of George Laskaris of Boston. Dear grandfather of Aris Simolaridis, Bill Simolaridis, Christopher Ostman and Michael L. He was a retired truck driver and former cab driver/owner. Mr. Laskaris has made his home in Braintree for over 30 years. He was born in Greece. Gazzara was born in Boston and died at his home in Chelsea on Saturday, Nov.18th at the age of 78. Paul graduated from Boston English High School, Class of 1939. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army. After serving in the Army as a Military Police Officer, he joined the Federal Police Dept. of the U.S. Government working out of the Boston Office for more than 30 years and he retired as a Police Lieutenant. He was very active in the Randolph D.A.V. Lodge and was past Sr. Vice Commander.

She was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School. Mary was a homemaker.

Dear step-mother of Michael Devlin of Tewksbury, Walter Devlin of Billerica and Kathy Osborne of Burlington. Daughter of the late Joseph V. and Anna R. (Muscato) Mina. She worked as a sales supervisor for American Mutual Insurance Co. in Boston and then in Braintree for many years. She has lived in Braintree for the past 30 years and previously she had lived in Quincy.

ALDEN, of Stoughton, formerly of Brockton and Holbrook, Nov. 16th, John S. Alden. Husband of the late Dorcas (Bentley) Alden. Loving father of Priscilla (Alden) Greene and her husband Robert of Stoughton, Roger Beattie of FL and the late Millie Sisson. Brother of the late Robert B. Alden and Forrest Alden. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. At the request of the family Funeral Services are private. Alden was born in Brockton and died at the Brockton Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 16th at the age of 92. John worked as a shoe worker in the shoe industry for many years. He attended Brockton Schools. John belonged to the Campello Lodge , No. 227 I.O.O.F. He was a Noble Grand. He also belonged to the Liberty Lodge #132, SF of A, where he was president and past president and he worked his way up through the chairs back in the 1940’s. He is also a member of the Holbrook Golden Ages. In his younger years he was an avid Blood Donor. Mr. Alden was a direct decendent to John Alden and Priscilla and also he was related to Col. Briggs Alden.

Former husband of Barbara (Gillis) Roche of Stoneham. Loving father of Julie Ann Castillo of Northampton, Rose Marie Hart of Norwood, Patrick T. McGuire of Plymouth, Paula M. Buono of Stoneham, Walter R. McGuire Jr. of Hobokon, NJ, Harry T. McGuire of Holbrook, Kelly C. Hart of Dedham, Mary T. McGuire of Medfield, James F. McGuire of Holbrook and Ellen K. Marinilli of Marshfield. Son of the late Michael and Margaret (Murphy) Roche. Devoted brother of Joseph Roche and his wife Carol of W. Jerry Roche was born in Boston and died at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston on Thursday, Nov. 16 at the age of 68. Before moving to Stoneham 3 years ago he had lived in Randolph for many years and he grew up in Mission Hill. He is a graduate of Boston Trade School. He worked as the Chief Court Officer in the Massachusetts State Senate for 40 years and he retired 2 years ago. He was a Randolph Town Meeting Member, former member of the Randolph Democratic Delegate Party, former St. Bernadette Church Rel. Ed. Teacher and Member of the Third Order of St. Francis. He developed the Parish Outreach Program at St. Bernadette Church, Randolph. He also worked closely with Catholic Charities and was dedicated to the Food Pantry in Randolph. He was a Deputy Sheriff in Norfolk County for 30 years. He was proud member of the St. Bernadette Parish and he was key member in sponsoring Cambodian Families through Catholic Charities. Most recently he was a communicant at St. Patrick Church, Stoneham where he led weekly rosary services. He dedicated his life to his family and his faith.

BACKGREN, of Brockton, unexpectedly, Nov. 15th Janice U. (Vachon) Backgren. Wife of the late Carl M. Backgren. Loving mother of Carl Backgren of Brockton and Jon Backgren of Bridgewater. Devoted sister of Carlton Vachon of Middleboro, Albert Vachon of Woburn, Virginia Cook of Pembroke, Richard Vachon of Taunton and the late Ruth Kilbey. Dear grandmother of Marianne Backgren. She was a school representative and a mentor in the Randolph School System, in 1997 she was selected as Randolph's Teacher of the year, she was a social studies teacher for the past 31yrs for the Randolph Junior High School. She passed suddenly in her home at the age of 52. She has been a life long resident of Randolph.

He died in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton at the age of 74.

Maxwell, of Holbrook Nov. 11th, Robert J. Jr.. Beloved husband of the late Margaret A. (Hogan). Loving father of Loretta Griswold of Quincy, Robert G. Cushman and his wife Kathryn of Holbrook. Devoted brother of Harriet Norton of Dorchester, Anita Kiely of Hingham, Phyllis Bai of Hamden CT. and the late Edward and Henry Maxwell. Also survived by 6 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren. Mr. Maxwell died Saturday in the Hollingsworth House in Braintree at the age of 87.

McDevitt, of Randolph, November 10th, William R., husband of Josephine (Ricci) McDevitt. Loving father of William McDevitt of Abington and Joanne McDevitt of Randolph. Devoted brother of Margaret Evans of Belchertown. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. He was a Life Member of the DAV of Randolph.

Retired employee of Draper Lab in Cambridge. Isabell C. Pettee was born in Nova Scotia, Canada and died at the Blue Hill Alzheimer's Nursing Home in Stoughton on Wednesday, Nov. 8th at the age of 74. She was employed with Draper Lab at MIT in Cambridge as a Draftsperson doing Government work in the Aerospace field. Isabelle had worked there for 30 years.

He was a professional musician. He played with the Handel and Hayden Society for 2 seasons.

He died at the VA Medical Center in Bedford on Nov. 7th at the age of 86. Mr. Ward was a Retiree of the United States Army. He served from August 5, 1943 to August 31, 1965. He served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a Chief Warrant Office 3 and in his 22 ½ years he spent 12 years in Europe an 13 months in Korea. After his retirement from the Military he worked for Mass General Hospital where he retired as Supervisor in Executive Housekeeping. A resident of Roxbury for 33 years and a member and communicant of St. Patrick Church, Roxbury. He also served as Head Usher at St. Patrick’s for many years. Mr. Ward was extremely education oriented both for himself and his children. After his retirement from the Military he attend college. At the age of 66 he earned a Bachelor of Arts from U Mass. He then continued on to Fisher Jr. College and Roxbury Community College where he earned Assoc. Degree in Computer Science and Business Administration. He attended college until he was 79 years old. He was on the a Board of Directors Alumni at UMASS Boston. He was on the Board of Directors for Roxbury Community Health Center.

Fr. John died in St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home, Brockton at the age 66. Born in Lowell grew up in Milton and graduate of Milton Schools, Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall Prep School, Boston, and Boston College. Served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. He worked in Rocket Re-Entry Physics at MIT Lincoln Laboratories including two and one half years at Kwajelein Atoll in the Marshall Island.

He was ordained a priest May 2, 1970 at Pope John 23rd National Seminary in Weston. Fr. John served six years at St. Brigid Parish, Lexington, 14 years as pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Roxbury, and became the Pastor of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish, Cambridge Sept. of 1989. Fr. Crowley received numerous Civic Awards for his work with the poor, world peace and social justice.
